MedTalks: Emergency Preparedness on the Sunshine Coast

A recent MedTalks event brought together representatives from local fire departments, Sunshine Coast Regional District Protective Services, BC Emergency Health Services, RCMP, and Sechelt | shíshálh Hospital to discuss how local agencies coordinate during emergencies and how residents can be better prepared.

During the session, speakers explained how emergency responders work together during major events such as wildfires, earthquakes, or severe weather to deploy resources quickly and provide clear, timely information to the community.

One tool highlighted was Voyent Alert, the local emergency notification system that sends real-time updates about emergencies, evacuations, and other urgent situations directly to your phone or email.

Speakers also shared practical steps residents can take to help emergency responders, including installing high-visibility house number signs so addresses are easier to locate, especially at night or during poor weather.

Attendees also had the opportunity to connect with community resource partners including Search and Rescue, Emergency Support Services, FireSmart, and the Sunshine Coast Rotary. Emergency kits are available through the Sechelt Community Associations Forum.
