Less than a year after initiating merger discussions, the new Sunshine Coast Chamber of Commerce held its inaugural general meeting in Roberts Creek on May 28, 2024. The event, which took place at the picturesque Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club, brought together returning and new Chamber members for a social luncheon, setting the stage for a collaborative future.
Mayor of Gibsons, Silas White, was our guest speaker and addressed key points of interest to the business community. He emphasized that a crucial function of the Chamber movement is to provide business owners with access to local leaders. This connection enables business owners to bring important issues to the attention of government officials at all levels, ensuring their voices are heard. The candid question and answer session following Mayor White’s speech was a highlight of the event, with members appreciating the open dialogue and opportunity to engage directly with a key local leader.
With provincial and federal elections on the horizon, Chamber members are eagerly anticipating all-candidates meetings. These events are a valuable opportunity for the business community to compare political platforms, ask pertinent questions, and hear directly from candidates. This engagement ensures that the interests and concerns of the Sunshine Coast business community are well-represented in upcoming elections.
The formal portion of the inaugural meeting included the adoption of the Chamber’s bylaws, a significant step in establishing the governance framework of the new organization. Additionally, the Chamber welcomed the acclamation of six continuing Directors and four new Directors, marking a blend of experienced and fresh leadership.
A traditional oath of office is often formal and lengthy. However, in a move that reflects the Chamber’s modern and dynamic approach, the Chair introduced a contemporary twist. All Directors were invited to stand and say, “I promise to do a great job for the Sunshine Coast Chamber of Commerce!” This five-second oath was met with enthusiastic cheers from the crowd, adding a lively and engaging conclusion to the event.
