AFTER 60 YEARS, TWILIGHT THEATRE RETURNS TO GIBSONS
GIBSONS, BC — More than sixty years after first opening its doors, one of the Sunshine Coast’s most recognizable landmarks is returning to its roots.
This June, the venue most recently known as Gibsons Cinema will reopen under its original name: Twilight Theatre.
“Twilight Theatre is more than just a name. It’s part of the history and identity of this community,” said Dominic Girard, one of the theatre’s new owners. “We felt it was important to recognize this building’s past, and usher it into a more exciting future.”
While the owners have a long-term vision for the theatre’s role in community life, they say the first step is rebuilding a vibrant local moviegoing culture and allowing everything else to grow from there.
“The upgrades and changes we’ve made all had one goal in mind: making this first phase of the new Twilight Theatre a cleaner, more comfortable, more cheeky and more welcoming place for the community,” said Ed Anderson, one of the owners.
Despite the struggles of independent cinemas across Canada, the owners remain committed to local cultural spaces. “We imagined what the Town of Gibsons would be like without a movie theatre,” said Steve Tannock, the third owner. “We didn’t like that idea at all. This community deserves a decent cinema, and a good reason to leave the house. We’ll try our best to make sure that happens.”
The return of the Twilight Theatre will be celebrated with a special opening weekend programmed to encourage the community to come back to the movies.
From June 5–7, admission for all screenings will be just $9.50 per person, a nod to the theatre’s new Twilight Tuesday discount pricing, which will offer moviegoers $9.50 admission every Tuesday moving forward.
The celebration begins Friday, June 5 with School of Rock, a joyful, crowd-pleasing comedy about creativity, mentorship, and finding your people.
On Saturday, June 6, audiences can experience a 30th Anniversary screening of Trainspotting, Danny Boyle’s iconic and influential cult classic.
Families can return on Sunday afternoon for Shrek, the beloved animated fairy tale that became a cultural phenomenon and remains a favourite across generations.
Following opening weekend, Twilight Theatre will settle into its regular programming rhythm.
On Twilight Tuesday, June 9, audiences can revisit The Matrix, the groundbreaking science-fiction film that redefined action cinema and visual effects for a generation.
Wednesday, June 10 features Undertone, a new Canadian thriller about a paranormal podcast host who becomes haunted by a series of terrifying recordings. Dominic Girard, Twilight Theatre co-owner and longtime podcast producer, personally selected the film. “I just had to program it so people can finally understand how terrifying podcast production can be,” he said.
The first week concludes Thursday, June 11 with Mile End Kicks, a new Canadian comedy-drama set in Montreal’s independent music scene.
